PatrickMannionPatrick Mannion, VP and Group Brand Director at UBM Americas (which includes the division previously known as UBM Tech), was laid off earlier today as the company looks for further cost reductions. Despite his marketing-style job title, Patrick is one of the best known and most respected names in electronics journalism. In recent times he steered content strategy for UBM’s flagship electronics brands – EE Times, EDN and Planet Analog. He started at EE Times in 2000, after 4 years with Penton Media. Patrick had a 6 month spell at Hearst’s Electronic Products in early 2011 but returned to UBM Electronics in May that year.  We met last week at Electronica where he was on great form, as always, producing a series video interviews with exhibitors. As traditional publishers have slashed editorial teams over the last few years, many leading technical journalists have found more secure and rewarding employment elsewhere in the industry. Brian Fuller and Richard Goering are now creating superb content for the marketing teams at Cadence, and Ron Wilson is doing the same at Altera. Maybe Patrick will go the same way and find a new outlet for his undoubted talents and great personality.
