UBM, publisher of EE Times, has announced that it is to purchase Canon Communications for $287 million, subject to anti-trust clearance. With respect to the media that serve the electronic engineering community, this is very significant. Two of the world’s top three brands, EDN and EE Times, are now under common ownership. And Penton’s Electronic Design magazine now faces a competitor with over twice its advertising revenue. No plans have yet been announced regarding how the potentially conflicting brands of EE Times and EDN will be managed. It may be coincidence, but as I write this, the EDN web site appears to be down. As the news broke, we couldn’t reach EE Times’ CEO, Paul Miller, but we’ll post further information as soon as we get it.
